Researchers Have Discovered A New State Of Matter

A team of physicists from New York University, University of Buffalo and Wayne State University have discovered a new state of matter, according to a recent research published on arXiv.

One of the researchers, Professor Javad Shabani from New York University, explained that, “Our research has succeeded in revealing experimental evidence for a new state of matter—topological superconductivity.” The new topological state can be manipulated to get higher calculating speeds and a lot more storage.
The research is based on quantum computing, which is a method that provides calculating prowess at incredible speeds, way faster than conventional computing. Conventional computing depends on processing using binary bits, 0s and 1s. Quantum computers use quantum bits (qubits) to process values between 0 and 1 which significantly increase the capacity and speed of data processing.
According to the research paper, the team analyzed the quantum states transition to a new topological state from the conventional state. They also measured the energy barrier (Energy level difference) between the two states. They concentrated on Majorana fermion particles which are their own antiparticles such that they have the same mass and opposite physical charge. Their capacity to store quantum information is something that scientists consider invaluable. But there are no natural hosts for the particles. Thus, scientists have tried to come up with new forms of matter.

The discovery can lead to better computing prowess paving the way for technological advances never seen before. Shabani also stated that the discovery of topological superconductivity within a two-dimensional platform provides the means to build scalable topological qubits that can store quantum information and allow manipulation of quantum states without errors
